Why volunteering matters

Volunteers are the lifeblood of many essential programs and services. In Victoria, volunteers contribute to sectors such as disability support, aged care, education, environmental sustainability and neighbourhood development.

When you volunteer, you play a role in building a stronger, more inclusive community, especially when you support individuals with disability. Your work will lead to incredible connections and create genuine impact, with positive flow-on effects that can last for years.

Many people volunteer to stay busy in retirement, or because giving back is an important personal value. Others understand just how much of a difference it makes, and are excited to help.

Benefits of volunteering

Personal growth and confidence

Getting involved in volunteer work can boost your confidence and self-worth. Contributing to something meaningful can build resilience, purpose and a deeper understanding of others. As explained by HealthDirect, people who volunteer have fewer signs of depression, anxiety and social isolation. It also builds ‘social capital’, which is the value you get from connecting with like-minded people.

Skill development

Volunteering is a great way to gain practical experience in leadership, communication, teamwork and problem-solving. Many roles also involve job-specific skills that can make a difference to a future job search.

Career advancement

Many people find volunteer experience strengthens their CV, opens doors to new career paths or even leads to paid roles within the sector they’re supporting. It shows initiative, commitment and a willingness to contribute.

If you own a business and volunteer, talk about it! Your efforts make a positive difference and can help strengthen your reputation in the community.
