Know your rights and value

Before you look for a job, you need to understand your rights.

The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and the Equal Opportunity Act (Victoria) both make it unlawful for employers to treat someone unfairly due to disability. These laws also require workplaces to make reasonable adjustments so employees with disabilities can do their job safely and effectively.

Beyond legal protections, inclusive hiring practices are becoming more common in Victoria. More and more employers recognise the contributions a diverse workforce can make, and are taking active steps to support accessibility and inclusion.

If you have disability, knowing your rights and the value you bring to a workplace empowers you to advocate for fair treatment, request adjustments to your work when you need it and access the same opportunities as anyone else.

Several government-funded services in Victoria specialise in helping people with disabilities enter or return to the workforce. These include:

  • Disability Employment Services (DES): DES providers in Victoria work with jobseekers to build skills, connect with inclusive employers and maintain long-term employment. Support may include job search assistance, workplace modifications and training.
  • NDIS employment support: If you're an NDIS participant, you may be eligible for employment-related services such as School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES). The NDIS also funds supports in employment for participants who need extra help to pursue their employment goals.
  • JobAccess: This national service offers practical support and expert advice about disability and employment, including information on workplace adjustments, funding for modifications and finding employers who prioritise inclusion.
